Definition and Specification of the Fasting of Ramadan PDF  | Print |

Masjidul Ummah - Ottery ---  Khutbah Focus 20/8/2010-

Definition and Specification of the Fasting of Ramadan:

Almighty Allah commands in The Holy Quran: ): "(2.183)Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may achieve Taqwah / piety (a state in which one observes and practices what Allah has prescribed for him in fear of and protecting oneself from His wrath) Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183. - "Ramadan is the month in which was send down the Quran as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and Judgment." (Surah Baqarah Verse 185).

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) stated -- The person who fasts only for the sake of Almighty Allah will experience 2 types of happiness. (1) When he breaks his fast and  (2) He will experience great happiness when he meets his creator (on the day of Hisaab).

Ramadan - is derived from the Arabic root word Ramida or arramad -- intense scorching heat and dryness, especially the ground.  From the same root there is Ramada, sunbaked sand, and the famous proverb: "Kal Mustajeer minar Ramadaa binnar" - to jump out of the frying pan into the fire.

*Thus, the Ramadan is so called to indicate the heating sensation in the stomach as a result of thirst and hunger. --Others said it is so called because Ramadan scorches out the sins like it burns the ground.--*Some said it is so called because the hearts and souls are more readily receptive to the admonition and remembrance of Allah during Ramadan, like the sand and stones are receptive to the sun's heat.

*The framers of this beautiful language may have been inspired by Allah (SWT) in naming this month Ramadan.  Otherwise, the relation between the heat and its properties is miraculously similar to that of Ramadan.  *While the heat represents the matter that helps shape, form, and mould virtually every matter, from metal and plastics, to plants and living cells- Ramadan undoubtedly helps a serious believer remould, reshape, reform, and renew his physical and spiritual disposition and behavioural patterns.

FASTING: -- Siyaam (Fasting), has two meanings.  Generally, Siyaam or sawm is derived from the root Sama, meaning to consciously refrain or abstain from normal things, such as eating, drinking, sexual relation in the marriage and general unnecessary talking for a set period of time. If an individual refrains from these things, he is considered a Saaim, (the observer of fast). Almighty Allah in the-Quran uses the word generally when He revealed the conversation between the Angel Gabriel (as) and Mary, the mother of Jesus, as the angel instructed her -  "And if you do see any person - say, "I have vowed to remain silent for the sake of Almighty Allah". (FA KOOLEE INNI NATHARTU LIR RAHMAANI -SAUMA) (Al-Quran 19:26) The phrase "to remain silent," is the interpretation of the Arabic word "sawm".

The reason for this interpretation is that "sawm" cannot mean restraint from food, drink etc - because Mary had just been told to eat from the date palm tree.  This general meaning is common in the Arabic language.-  In the Shari'ah (Islamic law) the "sawm" means and implies a specific act, which is, "to worship Allah, abstaining, with intention to please Him from things that nullify the fast, such as physical nourishment, food, drink, and sexual intercourse and all evil deeds and general unnecessary talk from the period between the break of dawn until sundown." As this definition implies, Islamic fasting is total abstinence from any food, particles passing through the mouth or nose, as well as drinks of any kind - water, milk, juice, etc. - along with abstinence from sexual association during the day that commences from the break of dawn till sunset.

Although the definition indicated restraining the stomach and private parts, the tongue, eyes ears and other limbs are equally obligated to be restrained if the fasting person wants to gain the total rewards of the month of Ramadan.  This is why Abu Hurairah (ra) has reported the Messenger of Allah (saw) as saying in a Hadith:  - "Whosoever does not abstain from false uttering, backbiting (creating trouble with his mouth) and does not abstain from obscene deeds. Almighty Allah does not care for his abstaining from eating and drinking.  ---- In another Hadith by Abu Hurairah (ra), the Prophet (saw) said: "Fasting is not only from food and drink, fasting is to refrain from obscene (acts).  If someone verbally abuses you or acts ignorantly toward you, say (to them) 'I am fasting; I am fasting.'"(Ibn Khuzayinah). Indeed, these two reports imply fasting will not be complete until one observes three elements:

(1)Restraining the stomach and the private parts from the break of the fast.

(2) Restraining the Jawarih, the other body parts, which may render the fast worthless despite the main factor of hunger and thirst; so the tongue, for instance, must avoid backbiting, slander, and lies; the eyes should avoid looking into things considered by the Lawgiver as unlawful; the ears must stop from listening to conversation, words, that spoil the spirit of fasting; and,

(3) Restraining of the heart, and mind from indulging, themselves in other things besides Dhikrullah (remembrance of Allah). Tilawah (Constant recital) of the Quran and constant Supererogatory (Sunnah / Nawafil) Salahs.

Fasting For Taqwah: Gaining Taqwah.    Allah legislated fasting for gaining Taqwah, "O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain Taqwah." (Meaning of Suratul Baqarah (2.183) Taqwah in this case means to be Holistically conscious of Almighty Allah and to make a shield between oneself and Allah's anger and Hellfire.  The origin of the word Taqwah is from the Arabic root letters Waqa’a and Wa’qaa’ya (meaning -a shield) and its verb is from the word “Ittaki”. Ittaki means to be careful or to be protected or to be cautious. Taqwah is an internal compass on the path that leads towards Allah.

The broader meaning and character of Taqwah is to develop one’s behaviour, so as to be cautiously aware in the worship of Allah and attain nearness to Him and in so doing, perfect oneself. ----This consciousness and fear of Allah is understood as a protection and a shield against wrongdoing. The abstention of evil through this fear, consciousness and establishing a cautious awareness of Allah, ultimately develops one’s love of Him. The universal principle of submission to the Divine Will is beautifully expressed in the character of one who is a servant of Allah, known as an “Abd-Allah” which is an ideal state of Taqwah.-- The Prophet (saw) was once asked “O Muhammad (saw) Where is Taqwah? – And he responded (showing to his heart) “

Among the community of believers, some are superior to others; and this superiority is a direct result of their own strivings toward being Holistically Allah Conscious. It is superiority linked to Absolute Iman, the strength and depth of deep faith and belief in Almighty Allah. A living faith that drives the one who possesses it to shield himself from whatever displeases Almighty Allah. This shield in Arabic is called "Taqwah." -- It has been variously translated as "fear of God", "piety", as well as "God-consciousness"; and it carries all these meanings and much more. Almighty Allah clearly expressed the superiority of Taqwah as follows in the Holy Quran:  "Verily the most noble among you is the one with the most Taqwah."

Almighty Allah is INFORMING US that the only factor, which makes a believing man or woman truly superior to another, is the level of Taqwah.    It is this piety, fear and consciousness of Allah, which elevates man from the level of the "thinking animal" to that of the true vicegerent (Khalifah) of the planets. The importance of the fear of Allah in a Muslim's life cannot be overstressed. Allah mentioned Taqwah and its derivatives 26 times in the Quran, everywhere emphasizing that Taqwah is the driving force behind absolute living faith. Without it, faith is only a meaningless jumble of memorized words and phrases, and 'righteous' deeds only shells of pretence and hypocrisy. Consequently, Taqwah (piety / righteousness/ God consciousness) is preferred over all other considerations in all of life's transactions.--Taqwah is then the antithesis of arrogance & Egotism,

So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fast every night - , ‘has this fasting day made me fear Almighty Allah more? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not? --   Hadith -  "Whosoever does not abstain from false uttering, backbiting (creating trouble with his mouth) and does not abstain from obscene deeds. Almighty Allah does not care for his abstaining from eating and drinking.

The Merits of Fasting: There are great merits to fasting. The following Ahaadith address this issue: Allah has chosen fasting for himself, and he rewards for it, and multiplies the reward without limit for the one who fasts, as we can deduce from the following Hadith: "- … fasting, for it is for me, and I reward for it." (Al-Bukhari,.)  - "Fasting is incomparable." (Al-Nasa’i 4/165, and it is in Sahih Al-Targheeb 1/413.)  --  "The DUAA (supplication) of one who is fasting is not rejected." (narrated by Al-Baihaqi 3/345 and it can also be found in Al-Silsilah Al-Sahihah 1797.)- A

"For the person who is fasting there are two moments of happiness and rejoicing;  (1) when he breaks his fast he is happy with his breakfast [i.e., that Allah has blessed him with the grace of having completed such an act of worship, as well as the freedom to enjoy what he has been abstaining from],  And (2) He will experience great happiness when he meets his creator (on the day of Hisaab " (Related by Muslim 2/807)

"Fasting becomes an intercessor for the worshipper on the day of Judgment. He says: 'Oh Lord I restrained him from food and from his desires during the day so allow me to intercede on his behalf.' " (Related by Ahmad 2/174,.)

- "Verily if a man stands with the Imam during Taraweeh Salaah until the Imam completes the Salaah. -Almighty Allah will grant him the reward of one who stood the whole night in Salaah. (Related by Ahmad)

"The smell of the breath of one who is fasting is more pleasant for Allah than the smell of musk." (Related by Muslim 2/807.)  -

-  "Fasting is a shield and a fortified fortress (that protects) from the Hell-Fire". (Related by Ahmad 2/402, and it is in Sahih Al-Targheeb 1/411 and Sahih Al-Jami' 3880.)

"[As a reward for] he who fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah distances the person's face from the Hell-Fire   (i.e., a distance which would take 70 years to traverse)". (Related by Muslim 2/808.)

"He who fasts a day with complete sincerity, solely seeking Allah's pleasure and gratification, and dies with this deed as his last action, goes to Heaven". (Related by Ahmad 5/391and in Sahih Al-Targheeb 1/412.)  --

"In Jannah there is a door called Al-Rayyaan; through it enter Al-Saa'imoon (those who used to fast during their lifetime). No one enters through it except for them, and once they enter, the door is shut and no one can enter through it." (Al-Bukhari #1797.)

As for Ramadan, it is a pillar of Islam and it was during this month that the first Quranic verses were sent down. Also during this month there is one night that is better than one thousand months. "Once Ramadan starts, the doors of Heaven are opened, and the doors of Hell are closed and the devils are chained." (related by Al-Bukhari Fath #3277).  -- Whosoever fasts in the month of Ramadan with firm Iman and hope for his reward from Almighty Allah, Allah (shwta) will forgive him all his past sins. " (Related by Al-Bukhari Fath #37).---   Furthermore, "for Allah, the Most Exalted and the Most Magnificent, at every breaking of the fast, there are people that he chooses to set free (i.e. save) from the Hell fire." (Ahmad, 5/256, and in Sahih al-Targheeb 1/419)

Allah explains in the Holy Quran.   "I have created Jinn and men, SO THAT they may worship ME." (Q. 51, 56)   It is clear from this verse that the purpose of our birth and our life is no other than to Holistically worship Almighty Allah. - We use the word, 'Ibadah, so glibly and with so much confusion that it is necessary to consider the true meaning of the concept and how it affects our lives individually and collectively.

How often do we not hear such statements as: "First do your 'Ibadah, then your worldly things."  or "He's a man of 'Ibadah, he performs his Salaah regularly." or "'Ibadah is one thing, business is another!" These statements imply that a Muslim lives two lives: a religious and a worldly life -- a kind of apartheid rooted in our very personalities. Often we are torn between two loyalties.

Sayyid Qutb maintains, "It is NOT natural for religion to be segregated from life in this world, nor is it natural for the divine system to be confined to conscientious feelings, ethical rules, and ritualistic worship. "What, then, is 'Ibadah?

Is it passive worship in the form of prayers or the reciting of litanies (Dhikr)? The word worship is defined in certain English dictionaries as meaning: courtesy or reverence paid to worth, honour, respect, dignity, worthiness, repute, an act of paying divine honours to a deity, religious reverence, etc. Are these meanings contained in the verse from Surah Fatihah: "Thee do we worship, and Thee Alone do we beseech for help"? Superficially, yes.

Scholars of the Quran point out that the word 'Ibadah appears in the Quran no fewer than 264 times and in 51 different forms. In the Arabic language, the word 'Ibadah, is derived from the root 'Abd, meaning a servant or a slave. 'Ibadah consists of those actions associated with a slave -- particularly expressed in honour of his Master. A slave's first form of behaviour is fidelity or faithfulness to his Master; secondly, obedience to his Owner and His Law and thirdly, respect and reverence. Let us consider the ayah, "I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve ME" in terms of this definition of 'Ibadah: Allah created us so that we will be faithful only to Him, and to no other being, that we should follow the commandments of Allah only (obedience), that we will not listen to the order of anybody else against Allah, and will bow our heads in respect and reverence only to Him and to no one else. This ayah calls upon us to strive ACTIVELY within the framework of Allah's Law.

In Conclusion: While fasting in this sacred month in humble devotion, let us contemplate in deep soul searching self judgment in the light of Islam, to asses our contribution to the welfare of our community and the Ummah at large, in obedience to Divine Injunctions and Islam's universal mission.

Islam is a call to all people, not only for worship but also for seeking the spiritual, moral and material betterment of all of Mankind, showing the way to build a better society.  --- Tolerance and Peaceful Co-Existence are in the essence of our Faith for it upholds Man's basic rights and freedom, insisting on equal opportunities for all. ---   But tolerance and peaceful co existence must not, on any account, be mistaken for weakness, submissive compromise with the forces of evil or passive surrender to tyranny. Our Faith exalts Liberty and the right to defend the Rights and Dignity of Muslims and all Mankind

We Pray Almighty Allah to assist us in this coming sacred month to: Do more than believe; but to practice. -- Do more than belong; participate. --· Do more than dream; work hard. --Do more than care; help. ---· Do more than be fair; be kind. ---· Do more than forgive; forget. --- Do more than think differently; but to make a difference.  -

We also pray Almighty Allah to accept our SIYAAM, (Fasting) All our sacrifices, our Salaah, our Duas  our Zakaah and Shower us with His Blessings and Favours.      May He grant all our Deceased Jannatul Firdous    Insha Allah,      and grant Shafaa-ah  to all  those who are sick.   And grant all of us Peace and a Blessed Month of Ramadan.

The Benefits of Ramadan.

Almighty Allah exhorts us in the Holy Quran: "O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain Taqwah." (Meaning of Suratul Baqarah (2.183)

In the month of Ramadan it is important that we understand some of the wisdom and lessons that we can learn from this month of fasting.   Unfortunately, many Muslims come in to this month and terminate the fasting of the month in the same way, -- as a companion of the Prophet, (saw), said: "Let it not be that the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal." Meaning, one's behavioural patterns, attitude and outlook should not be the same, whether one fasts or not, i.e. fasting should have some effect upon that person. This is why we need to reflect on some of these lessons and benefits.

LESSON 1: Gaining Taqwah. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fasts, ‘has this fasting day made me fear Almighty Allah more? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not?

LESSON 2: Drawing closer to Allah. This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on Al-Quran during night and day, attending the Taraweeh prayers, remembering Allah, sitting in circles of knowledge and, for those who can, making an` Umrah. Also for those who can, making I`tikaaf (seclusion) in the last ten nights of Ramadan, so as to leave all worldly pursuits and seclude oneself in a Masjid just thinking of Allah, so as to bring oneself closer to Allah (SWT). When one sins, one feels distant from Allah. That is why one might find it heard to read the Qur'an and come to the Masjid. However, the obedient worshipper feels closer to Allah and wants to worship Allah more, because he is not shy from his sins.

LESSON 3: Acquiring patience and strong will. Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Qur'an and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book. So when one fasts, and gives up one’s food and drink, and one’s marital sexual relations for those hours, one learns restraint and patience. This Ummah needs man and women that are strong willed, who can stand upon the Sunnah and the Book of Allah and not waver in front of the enemies of Allah. We do not need emotional people, who just raise slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand upon something firm, they cannot do so, they waver.

LESSON 4: Striving for Ihsaan (righteousness and sincerity) and staying away from riyaa’ (showing off). Ihsan means to worship Allah as if one seeks Him, and even though one does not see Him, He sees all. Hassan al-Basree said, "By Allah, in the last twenty years, I have not said a word or taken something with my hand or refrained to take something with my hand or stepped forth or stepped back, except that I have thought before I have done any action, ‘Does Allah love this action? Is Allah pleased with this action?' So when one is fasting, one should gain this quality of watching oneself and also staying away from riyaa’ (showing off). That is why Allah said in a Hadith qudsi, "Fasting is for Me and I reward it." (al-Bukhari) Allah singles out fasting from all other types of worship saying, "Fasting is for Me", because no one knows whether you are fasting or not, except Allah. For example, when one is praying or giving charity or making Tawaaf, one can be seen by the people, so one might do the action seeking the praise of the people. Sufyan ath-Thawree used to spend the nights and the days crying and the people used to ask him, "Why do you cry, is it due to the fear of Allah? He said, ‘No.’ They said, "Is it due to the fear of the Hellfire?" He said, ‘No. It is not the fear of Hellfire that makes me cry, what makes me cry is that I have been worshipping Allah all these years and doing scholarly teaching, and I am not certain that my intentions are purely for Allah.’"

LESSON 5: Refinement of manners, especially those related to truthfulness and discharging trusts.   The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah (SWT) has no need that he should heave his food and drink." (al-Bukhari) What we learn from this, is that we must pay attention to the purification of our manners. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "I was sent to perfect good manners." (Maalik) So we must check ourselves, are we following the behavior of the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him)? For example: Do we give salaam to those we don’t know and those we do know? Do we follow the manners of Islam, by telling the truth and only telling the truth? Are we sincere? Are we merciful to the creation?

LESSON 6: Recognizing that one can change for the better. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinners are those who repent." (Ibn Maajah) Allah provides many opportunities to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become obedient.

LESSON 7: Being more charitable. Ibn `Abbaas said, "The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month…" (al-Bukhari) The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, without nothing being reduced from the fasting person’s reward." (at-Tirmidhi)

LESSON 8: Sensing the unity of the Muslims. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "…Those of you who will live after me will see many differences. Then you must cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khaleefahs. Hold fast to it and stick to it." (Abu Dawood) In this month we sense that there is a possibility for unity, because we all fast together, we break fast together, we all worship Allah together, and we pray Salaatul-`Eid together. Therefore we sense that the unity of Muslims is possible. It is possible for Muslims to be a single body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allah and His Messenger.

LESSON 9: Learning discipline. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) made us adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to fanaticism or going outside the bounds that Allah has laid down. One cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this is not acceptable to Almighty Allah.. Muslims should learn to be disciplined in their lives, because they are the followers of an important message, around which they should mould their lives.

LESSON 10:
Teaching the young to worship Allah. It was the practice of the people of Medina, that during the fast of `Aashoora (which is now a recommended fast of one day) to get their children to fast with them. When the children would cry of hunger and thirst, their parents would distract their attention by giving them some sort of toy to play with. The children would break their fast with their parents. (as mentioned in al-Bukhari). So the young should be brought to the Masjid and they should pray with their parents, so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming worshippers of Allah. If one does not encourage children to fast when they are young, they will find it very difficult to fast for thirty days at the age of puberty. This is why the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Command your children to pray at the age of seven and beat them at the age of ten (if they do not pray)." (Hakim)

LESSON 11: Caring for one’s health. Fasting has many medical benefits and it teaches Muslims to take care of their health and too build strong bodies. The Prophet (may Allaah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "A strong believer is better and is more beloved by Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone." (Muslim)

And I Pray Almighty ALLAH:  To let us try hard to live every day as it comes, accepting each new dawn as a fresh gift -- full of opportunities and chances to do good and kind things to those whom we love and care for. Let us not waste time, or find ourselves called back to Almighty ALLAH with any of His gifts not used. O Allah, help us – not to fail in our duty, to hold up the light of Islam, in our thoughts, in our words, and mostly in our actions

May the year ahead be a prosperous one filled with Barakah, Rahmah, Happiness, Health, Wealth, Success and Peace Insha-Allah.  May this year be better than the past years and let us at the inception of this new year strive to attain Allah's nearness and pleasure and may Allah Almighty forgive us all for our past short-comings..

O Allah -- Show us how to love the things that You love, and help us to keep away from the things that you have forbidden. --  O ALLAH, help us, guide us, and protect us from your enemies.

Ameen!

Zapiro's Cartoon PDF  | Print |

Khutbah:  A Response To The  "Zapiro Cartoon Controversy".

Masjidul Ummah - 28/5/2010.

Imam Noor Salie.

All praise is due only to Allah. We thank Him; we seek His assistance and forgiveness. We seek Refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and the wickedness of our deeds. Whosoever Allah has guided none can lead astray, and whosoever is astray none will be able to guide. -- I bear witness that there is no True God except Almighty Allah, who has no partner, and I bear witness that our chief and leader Muhammad (saws) is His true servant and messenger. May Allah's choicest blessings be upon him, his family and companions and may Allah salute him with abundance of salutations

Almighty Allah exhort us in the Quran:  Surah 49/v13   "O mankind! We have created you from a single pair of male and female, And made you into nations and tribes that you may know each other. The Most Honoured of you is he who is the most Righteous of you" surely Allah is All Knowing, Aware.--

Almighty Allah also state in the Quran:  (13:11)  – Verily Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change what was in themselves..

And: Surah An-Nahl, Verse125 - "and invite to the path of your Lord, using wisdom and beautiful preaching. And interact with them in ways that are best" ,

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) stated:  Whosoever obeys me (Muhammad (saw)  - is obedient to Allah - And whosoever disobeys me (Muhammad (saw)  - is disobedient to Allah -

Cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, a.k.a. Zapiro, South Africa's premier cartoonist, known for his controversial style in picking on politicians and commenting on social inequalities, has come into the limelight in South Africa for jumping on the “Draw Muhammad Day” bandwagon.   - “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” is a drawing event organized and inspired by a comment by the Seattle cartoonist, Molly Norris in a radio interview about Comedy Central's decision to censor a South Park episode that had depictions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

We are also extremely disappointed with Zapiro for simply “jumping on the bandwagon” which is very unlike him. We always thought Zapiro had deep insight, sharp wit and gets to the heart of the issues at hand. Zapiro’s cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) shows only deep ignorance and I’m not sure if Zapiro’s cartoon can be judged as a victory for freedom of expression. We should also question whether it is “Freedom of Expression or Freedom without Responsibility--

This campaign to draw the holy Prophet (PBUH) has garnered all sorts of support and opposition in the media and the internet. –  There were numerous death threats against Zapiro and the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has denounced the death threats against Zapiro and has called on Muslims to refrain from making such threats.

The MJC rejected calls for the boycott of the Mail and Guardian newspaper, which published the cartoon, many Muslims have found offensive - as Islam forbids any depiction of the prophet (saw).  While rejecting the cartoon, the MJC called death threats against the cartoonist "un-Islamic", saying such threats had no place in the religion or society. "It only implies that Muslims lack the intellect to resolve disagreements through proper dialogue and communication, which is far from the truth."

Yes, the cartoons are offensive but so are the violent responses.

If we reflect back about three and a half years ago Muslims the world over were deeply offended by the cynical and scurrilous cartoons of the Prophet (saw) in the Danish newspapers. Muslims protested to no great effect, and while certain Muslim countries have exercised restraint, others have not. -- Muslims were and still are enraged and deeply resentful of the humiliation and what they see as yet another blow under the belt for Islam. - Unfortunately, during that time we also witnessed how the global Muslim protest over these cartoons spun out of control.

On February 4th  2006 the buildings containing the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria were set ablaze.

n Beirut the burning of the Danish Consulate resulted in the death of one protestor inside the complex.

In Afghanistan at least ten people have been reported killed in riots.

In Turkey a Catholic priest was murdered ostensibly in response to the cartoons.

In Europe -- journalists have been issued with death threats.

In one report from Islamabad, a Taliban leader, Mullah Dadallah, is reported to have offered a 100 kilograms of gold, to anyone who would kill the editor of the Danish newspaper who published the cartoons.

And again a few years ago – In his lecture at a German university, the 265th Pope - -- Pope Benedict 16  described what he sees as a huge difference between Christianity and Islam: the Pope stated that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ordered his followers to spread their religion by the sword. -- The Pope equated Islam with violence and insulted the Character of our beloved Prophet (saw)-

We have also seen Cabinet Ministers taking issue in France and in Turkey on the Hijaab in disallowing our Sisters the ability to exercise their God-given right to cover themselves as Almighty Allah has prescribed.

Over the last YEARS (Since 9/11 2001), The Muslim Ummah have been the subject of intense media interest, mostly of the unwelcome kind. You can hardly pick up a newspaper or switch on the radio or TV, without finding Islam in some bad news department, again. - This will not be the first time, and certainly not the last time that Muslims are wrongly presented as a ‘problem’ and Islam is the target of vicious and sophisticated propaganda.

When we reflect back in History we will find that right from the earliest days our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws) had to endure hatred and abuse from those who saw Islam as a threat --  The Prophet (saw) was the brunt of mockery, ridicule and satire all the time he remained in Mecca. He was provoked and antagonised all the time by his own family and friends. The refusal of the Meccan nobles and business barons to see - what to him was clearly the Truth and Reality --often drove him to despair. Even in Madinah he was frequently baited and taunted by the unbelievers and hypocrites.  He was repeatedly tutored in the Quran by Almighty Allah Himself  - to control his passions, not to get overwrought or emotional at the reactions and conduct of those who rejected the Message of Islam; --  that he was a mere messenger and it was for his Master Almighty Allah to safeguard the sanctity of His Message and to protect his person.

How did he deal with their lies, antagonism and provocations? How did he deal with the abuse and insults? Did he stamp his feet, burn flags and call for marches and for the death of his enemies? No, he did not. He was, after all, uswatul hasana, the most excellent role-model. He knew that his behaviour would set the pattern for devout Muslims not only during his own lifetime, but for all time to come. In the face of extreme danger, he relied only on his Lord. He carried on his good work of preaching, teaching and living an excellent example. He was never desperate, he never exceeded the Hudood-dullah, the limits set by Allah.

He endured all hardship with extraordinary dignity and forbearance. He relied completely on the Mercy of Allah. And In time, his patience was rewarded when Allah gave him victory over those mighty forces that were thrust against him. Remember, no injustice endures forever. No hardship comes without relief. Here is a lesson for us all. --  Says the Holy Quran [s.94v5] “With every difficulty, there comes relief. Truly, with every difficulty there will be relief.”

The following verses from the Quran are some of the many that illustrate this point:

6 10- Mocked were the messengers before thee; but those who mocked them - were engulfed by that which they mocked. --

16 -128  - For Allah is most certainly with those who restrain themselves and do good (Worship Allah with Absolute Consciousness). (Under tremendous provocation)-

THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR VERSES IN THE H.Q.

Don’t help anyone who wants to prove that you are oversensitive, immature and violent. --Knee-jerk and reflexive reactions only play into their hands. Don’t misbehave in the way they want you to misbehave. - At the same time I must state very clearly that we as Muslims should never, ever become defensive and adopt a ‘victim’ culture. We should not become victims and think and act like victims. We have nothing to hide. Our beliefs are clear and we have no hidden agendas.

We have nothing to be ashamed of and certainly nothing to fear. This is simply a period of trial and tribulation for us. Allah is testing us to see what we’re made of. We shouldn’t be surprised, depressed or distressed. Those who read the Holy Quran will find this confirmed in Surah Al Baqarah 2:214: “Do you suppose that you would enter the Garden without first having suffered like those before you? They were afflicted by misfortune and hardship, and they were so shaken that even [their] Messenger and the believers with him cried: ‘When will Allah’s help arrive? Truly, Allah's help is ever near.”

When our beloved Prophet (saw) and his companions were under attack at the battle of Uhud,-- they were warned: a huge army is waiting to destroy you! But instead of fear and panic, this only increased their faith: Their reply was,  -Allah is enough for us as our Protector and our Helper! -- That’s what we have to say, now that we and our faith are under attack from all sides. Allah is enough for us, and He is our best Guardian. He is firmly in control of everything. He carries the whole of His creation in the palm of His Hand.--  “Blessed is Allah, in Whose Hand lies the control of everything, and to Him we shall all return.” This is the last verse of Surah Yaasin. [Surah 36]

There is clear malice involved in the publication of the cartoons, and it is yet another illustration of Islamophobia and hate speech against Muslims that appears to be pervasive in western media depictions of Islam. Muslims have the right to protest -but those Muslims who vent their dismay with destruction are wrong.- We must realise that all our troubles will pass, and they are not a punishment. It’s only a test from Allah, a test of patience and endurance - We must learn to trust Allah. When we entrust our affairs to Him and take Him to be an intimate friend, He will take us into His inner circle of intimate friends. And in His inner circle He promises to remove every trace of fear and anxiety…… In many places throughout the Holy Quran, he re-assures us in these words: -Behold, on the Friends of Allah, there is no fear, and no grief. [Surah 10:62]

No fear and no grief. No anxiety. True Muslims are not desperate people. When our hearts are filled with Allah awareness [Taqwah], overflowing with kindness and generosity to our neighbours and friends, we simply cannot become dangerous and desperate people no matter how great the provocation.  Remember, even when others may plot and plan, Allah is still the best of planners. He urges us to think, to ponder and reflect. Why are we under attack? Why is Islam being presented as a threat? And how can we Muslims defuse the situation? How can we turn this problem into an opportunity, a blessing in disguise?

There are many reasons why some people fear and hate Islam. This Khutbah is far too short to go into the details. --Clearly, some Westerners are deeply concerned that Islam is spreading so fast. (It is a well known fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion)  In the year 1900 Muslims accounted for 12% of world population. Now, a century later it has almost doubled to 23% and continues to rise. The secular historians are confused. Every other empire has come and gone: The Pharaohs, the Greeks, and the Romans. Even the last Muslim empire, the Ottoman, was dismantled in 1922. According to secular logic, we should all be atheists by now! Mosques should have become museums, the places where Muslims used to pray, but everywhere mosques and prayer rooms (like this one) are overflowing.

And its not just about numbers. More importantly, it’s about quality. More and more educated and privileged reverts are entering Islam in Britain, Europe and North America. These new Muslims are the crème-de-la-crème, from the upper echelons of Western society. The secular world with its glossy TV ads promise much, but delivers very little lasting human happiness and fulfilment. Islam offers a way to complete happiness, not by indulging the human ego with selfishness and greed, but by taming the Nafs (animalistic desires) and controlling it.

While others see the world as a place to be exploited Muslims are informed that everything belongs to Allah,  and we are merely trustees, who are accountable for our trust. While others need a hierarchy of priests, bishops and archbishops to help them find salvation, nothing and no-one stands between a Muslim and his Lord. Allah is directly accessible, one to one, 24/7 with no intermediaries. “When my servant asks you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me. Let them also respond to My call, so that they may be guided.” [Al Baqarah 2:186]

The best antidote and source of healing/shifa to this sordid affair is for us as Muslims to devote ourselves to emulating the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). For he is the embodiment of every virtuous ideal for us as Muslims. When we think of divine mercy, kindness and integrity, we think of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He is truly as the Quran confirms in Surah Al-Anbiya, Chapter 21, verse 107: We sent you (O Muhammad) as A Source of Mercy unto the entire Universe.

And again in Surah Nun, Chapter 68, verse 4: And you (O Muhammad) have an exalted character

The Prophet Muhammad himself described the reason of his prophetic mission as follows:  I have been sent to perfect the goodness in human character.

I would like to conclude this Khutbah by reminding us all about the inspiring manner in which our beloved exemplar (uswahtun hasana) -Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) responded to ridicule, abuse and persecution during his lifetime. During his lifetime, Prophet Mohammed endured insults and ridicule on a daily basis. His opponents mocked his message and used physical violence to stop him from challenging the status quo. At no stage during this ordeal did the Prophet lose his temper or react to these provocations. Tradition has it that he would, instead, offer a prayer of forgiveness to those who showed contempt for him. There are off course numerous examples of his compassionate responses to abuse I have selected only a one.

The most dramatic example that comes to mind is the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)’s response to the abuse he endured at the hands of the people of Taif. After experiencing great difficulty in preaching his message in the city of his birth, Makkah, the Prophet decided to travel to the nearby city of Taif in the hope that his message would receive a more positive response. Sadly, he was wrong. The people of Taif encouraged their street urchins to stone him out of their city. Lying forlorn with blood flowing freely from his wounds and covering his feet, the beloved of Allah, turned to his Lord with make the following inspirational prayer: In the aftermath of that onslaught, the Prophet, peace and blessings of God upon him, humbly raised his hands towards the sky and prayed:

"O Allah! I complain to You of my weakness, my scarcity of resources and my humiliation before the people. O Most Merciful of those who are merciful. O Lord of the oppressed and you are my Lord. To whom have you dispatched me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy to whom you have granted authority over my affair? So long as You are not displeased with me, I do not care. It is your goodness I seek to be covered with. I seek refuge in the light of Your Face by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest your displeasure descend upon me. I desire your pleasure and satisfaction until you are pleased. There is neither strength nor power except by You."

After this prayer was uttered by the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) Allah sent Angels to visit him with an offer that Allah crush the city of Taif, the Prophet (pbuh) refused praying instead that perhaps from the offspring of the offending people of Taif, there would emerge those who would recognize their Lord. This incident is well known in the books of Sirah.

Finally: There are critical elements that this debate has brought to the fore: Those of us who read Nic Dawes editorial in the M&G (on this issue) are bound to be impressed with his clearly engaging the issues in an honest and transparent way. He speaks about what he has learnt, what mistakes he made and what principles are inalienable.

There is an apology for causing hurt and a commitment to greater sensitivity. But also a firm commitment that the rights of the free press and freedom of expression will not be curtailed. We also learn the power of negotiation and dialogue. The apology from the M&G came about through such a process. But we also had all parties claiming victory – which is a marker of a successfully negotiated settlement. But we also learn that while we may ban, threaten and bully newspapers, the world-wide web is a free space that allows ideas to flow and permeate without restriction. Thus these instruments of the past grant hollow victories. Hallowed victories are achieved through gentle persuasion through love, compassion and example.

Critical questions which require engagement include: How do Muslims live in a secular, democratic society where a market- place of competing ideas will constantly challenge the other? How do Muslims behave as model citizens and conduct ourselves when criticised? How do Muslims use the instruments of dialogue, negotiation and communication to win respect - rather than through vituperation and violence? How do Muslims communicate their sensitivities to others without threatening them or their beliefs in freedom of speech? And importantly how do we give effect to and expand the spirit of the Compassion Charter that was launched a week ago by the Cape town Interfaith Initiative and endorsed by the Claremont Main Road Mosque.

The emotional wound caused by the cartoons cannot be undone, but there is plenty that can be done. This incident also provides an opportunity for people of all faiths to recognize and acknowledge that which is sacred in other religions, even if it is not sacred to them personally.

There is a dire need for the followers of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, as well as all other traditions, and even for people with no religion, to retrieve our common humanity and to end the horrific dehumanization that is taking place on global scale. I call upon Muslims to use the tragic sequence of events as an impetus for candid dialogue about freedom of speech, cultural xenophobia, and the root causes of violence and terror.

Let us prayer to Almighty Allah for world peace and bestow salutations and peace upon our beloved leader and exemplar Muhammad) peace and blessings be upon him forever)

Invocation for Peace -- O Allah thou art Peace and Peace emanates from thee - Allow us, our Sustainer and Lord to live and to subsist in Peace. - For thou art indeed the Most Compassionate of those who display compassion.

33:56 Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you who believe! You also send blessings on him, and salute him with all respect.

Let us pray:    Rab Bana – Our Lord! --Help us always to remember You, so that we may dedicate our lives to Your full service -- not out of any fear, but out of love for the One Who is most perfect, the Lord of the unseen, the Lord of this life and the life to come.

Rab Bana – Our Lord! Cause this gathering to be a gathering of Mercy and our leave-taking after this -  full of your protection and do not create in us or amongst us, and in those that follow us, misery and misfortune. -– Our Lord! Condemn us not if we fall into error and lay not on us a burden greater than we have the strength to bear.

– Our Lord! --"YOU ARE OUR GUARDIAN. THEREFORE FORGIVE US AND HAVE MERCY ON US, AND YOU ARE THE BEST OF FORGIVERS. - ORDAIN FOR US GOOD IN THIS WORLD AND IN THE HEREAFTER, FOR WE TURN TO YOU ONLY. – AMEN!
